[opening credits]
[Scene 1]
Open to a view of Idaho Falls at night from a house on the hill. Pan to the house and zoom into the window. Inside you see Martin Corvino pacing. With pictures and papers scattered. Pan to the answering machine.
[The answering plays a message]
[Robin's voice coming from answering machine]
Robin: Hi Martin, this is Robin. I was wondering if you could come help me move some things to my basement tomorrow- they're too heavy for me to lift on my own. The sooner you come the better. I have a date at nine o'clock. Speaking of dates, I'm sorry that things couldn't work out between us. I know we've been friends for a long time, you have a key to my house after all, and I think that's why we should be able to stay friends after this. Anyway, I would really appreciate the help. Good-bye.
[Pan and zoom in on a picture of a staircase]
[pan to Martin looking at a picture of Robin. First, with a depressed look. Then, angry]
Martin: She'll wish she hadn't broken up with me.
[Martin sets the picture down and starts looking for a scarf-he doesn't have one]
[Cut to his plans and zoom in on a picture of the couch]
[Martin starts writing a checklist of things he will need as well as steps for his murder-
“Preparation
-scarf
-key
-make sure door doesn't squeak
-close blinds”
“What to do
-sneak in
-hide downstairs
-wait for her to come home
-wait for her to sit down
-sneak up
-strangle
-make it look like accident
-blinds
-call police to report accident”
[Martin tears this out of his notebook, folds it up, and puts it in his pocket]
[Scene 2]
open to Martin waiting at Robin's door. While he is waiting he pulls the checklist from his pocket and looks it over then puts it back in his pocket. She let's him in
Robin: Hi Martin! I'm so glad you could help me with this.
Martin:Yeah, no problem. Just show me what to move and where to move it.
[She leads him in and shows him a bunch of boxes that need moved]
Robin: We need to move all of these boxes. Pick up a box and come with me downstairs.
Martin: Okay
[Martin picks up a box and they head downstairs. On the way down the door squeaks]
Robin: [pointing] Put that one there.
Martin: Right here?
Robin: Yep, now go back upstairs and get some more boxes. I'll wait down here and figure out where to put them.
[The door squeaks again as he heads up]
[before getting some more boxes Martin closes the blinds next to the couch]
[he then proceeds to get more boxes and heads back down]
[on the way down the door squeaks again]
Martin: Your door is a little squeaky. I can grease it for you if you'd like.
Robin: Yeah, that would be okay.
Martin: Okay, there's just one load left. I'll do it after that.
[Martin takes the last load down]
Martin: Do you have grease?
Robin: No, butter will work, though. Right?
Martin: Yeah, where is it?
Robin: You stay here, I'll get it.
[cut to Martin leaving]
Robin: Thanks for doing that...and the door-you didn't have to do that.
Martin: Anything for a friend.
Robin: Well, I better start getting ready for my date with Peter.
Martin: Right! I'll leave you alone. [looks outside] It's looks a little cold out there, can I borrow this scarf.
Robin: Sure.
[Martin leaves]
[Scene 3]
open to Peter's car pulling up into Robin's driveway. He walks up to the door and knocks. Robin answers.
Peter: Are you ready?
Robin: Yeah, let's go.
[they walk to the car. Peter holds the door open for Robin then gets in himself. They drive off.]
[cut to Martin in his home getting ready for the murder]
[he puts on a jacket, grabs the scarf, and finds the key]
[he leaves his house]
[cut to Peter and Robin on their date]
[They are walking the greenbelt at night]
Peter: So how have you been?
Robin: I've been okay, pretty good for just getting over a break-up though. How have you been?
Peter: I've been well.
Robin: That's good. You make movies right?
Peter: Yeah.
Robin: How do you like that?
Peter: I love it. It's the best job in the world. What do you do?
Robin: I'm a waitress.
Peter: Do you like that?
Robin: At times.
[cut to Robin's front door and a close up shot of Martin opening the door.]
[show Martin quietly entering and closing the door]
[cut back to Peter and Robin as they sit down on a bench, still talking]
Robin: Yeah, our break-up has been bothering me a little.
Peter: You still like him?
Robin: a little, but I'm afraid he still likes me too much. I'm afraid he might try and do something drastic.
Peter: Don't worry about it. It'll all work out in the end.
Robin: True. Why are we even talking about this? We're on a date for heaven's sake, not the break-up hotline.
Peter: Okay, what do you want to talk about?
Robin: Isn't the river so beautiful at night?
[cut to Martin sneaking downstairs to wait for Robin]
[cut back to Peter and Robin]
Peter: Well, I better get you home. It's almost midnight.
Robin: Okay.
[they get up and leave the greenbelt]
[cut to Peter walking Robin to the door]
Robin: Thanks for the date
Peter: You're welcome.
[They hug]
[Peter leaves and Robin goes inside]
[Scene 4]
Robin is alone in her house. She is hungry so she grabs a sandwhich from the fridge and goes to sit on the couch to eat it. She starts eating. Martin quietly and slowly opens the basement and starts coming up the stairs. Robin takes a drink, you see Martin's shadow behind her. Martin wraps the scarf up in his hands. The clock shows 12:13. Robin sets the drink down. Martin starts strangling her. She struggles and gets free. She runs to the kitchen and grabs a knife. Scared, she runs to the bedroom. Martin chases her down the hall. She takes a stab at him but misses. He grabs a pillow and pushes her onto the bed. He smothers her with the pillow. She struggles. As she is struggling Martin's button comes off his jacket. It is seen falling onto the floor. Robin dies and her hand is seen dropping the knife.
[Scene 5]
Martin covers up his crime. He drags Robin's dead body back to the living room where he lays her on the couch. He then pushes her off and put the cords from the blinds around her neck. He then throws her food away and puts the drink in the sink. He makes the bed and then leaves.
[Scene 6]
Martin comes back to Robin's house in the morning. He calls the police to report her “accident.”
Martin: Hello, I...found my friend dead at her house. It looks like she fell asleep on the couch and fell off and strangled herself with the cords of the blinds.
[Scene 7]
Open to the scene of the crime. Investigator 2 is taking while investigator 1 bags evidence. Head detective Jay Fowler is questioning Martin.
Fowler: Hello, I'm head detective Jay Fowler. Are you the one who reported the death?
Martin: Yes.
Fowler: And you're name is...
Martin: Martin Corvino
Investigator 1: Excuse me.
Fowler:[to Martin] Just a second. Stay here.
[steps away with Investigator 1]
Investigator 1: we found a button on the bedroom floor and the bruises on her neck are too big for the cords.
Fowler: Okay, so it obviously wasn't an accident then.
Investigator 1: Exactly, she was murdered.
Fowler: Okay, keep looking for evidence and I'll do some digging.
[Investigator 1 walks away]
[Fowler resumes questioning Martin]
Fowler:Where were you last night when miss Russell presumably died?
Martin: I was watching TV at home.
Fowler: Did you visit her at all yesterday?
Martin: Yes, I helped her move some boxes.
Fowler: And when did you finish with that?
Martin: About six o'clock.
Fowler: Did she have any plans for later?
Martin: As a matter of fact she did, she had a date at nine o'clock and wasn't supposed to get home until midnight. Wait, do you think she was murdered?
Fowler: Possibly. Who was the date with?
Martin: Peter Crane
Fowler: That's all for now. Thanks for your cooperation.
Martin No problem.
[Martin leaves]
[Scene 8]
[Fowler questions Peter]
Fowler: Are you Peter Crane?
Peter: I am.
Fowler: I'm head detective Jay Fowler. Would you mind answering some questions?
Peter: No, not at all.
Fowler: How did you know Robin Russell?
Peter: She was a good friend. I met her in High School. Why?
Fowler: She's dead. Is it true that you went on a date with her last night?
Peter: [getting nervous and starting to freak out] Yes.
Fowler: What did you do on your date?
Peter: [still nervous] We took a walk around the greenbelt.
Fowler: And after?
Peter: I took her home.
Fowler: Did you stick around at her house or go straight home.
Peter: Well, we said good-bye and hugged, but after that I went straight home.
Fowler: I'm not sure I believe you...
[Fowler handcuffs Peter as the screen fades]
[scene 9]
[back at the scene of the crime]
Investigator 1: There was no sign of a break-in.
Fowler: So that means either the door was unlocked, or the killer had a key.
Investigator 1: Corvino said he used a key to get in when he found her dead.
Fowler: Really? We may have booked the wrong guy.
Fowler: Where is that button?
Investigator 1: I bagged it with the rest of the evidence.
Fowler: get it and bring it to me.
[investigator 1 brings the button to Fowler]
[cut to Fowler talking to Peter in car]
Fowler: is that the suit you were wearing last night?
Peter: Yes.
[Fowler checks if the button matches]
[it doesn't]
Fowler: you can go.
[uncuffs Peter]
[cut back to crime scene]
Fowler: Is Martin Corvino still here?
Martin: Right here
Fowler: Were you wearing that last nigh?
Martin: No, I was wearing a jacket, why?
Fowler: Go get your jacket.
Martin: Okay
[Martin leaves and comes back with his jacket]
[Fowler checks for a match]
[the button matches]
Fowler: We've found our killer.
[Fowler handcuffs Martin]
